I read Of Mice And Men on my way to the Isle of Man on a work trip, and then I read it again on the way back. And I could pick it up right now and read it again, from start to finish.
There aren’t all that many books that have brought a lump to my throat (Garp is one), but this did it, both times. The desperate inevitability of the outcome is, well, inevitable, and yet I still hoped, the second time, that it wouldn’t happen. Poor chap.
It’s been made into a film too, if you’re not a reader, but come on—it’s only 120 pages long, and the text is quite big.
